Abstract

The article has three aims: to reveal some theoretical underpinnings of formalinformal approach in urban studies, to estimate the results of some world-wide comparative research, and to compare with some results of investigation of public participation activity in sixteen European countries fulfilled about 30 years ago. There were also the aims to comprehend the roots of modern criticism of modernity, the lack of analysis of mechanisms of interaction between a state and civil society, and to understand the roots and forms of publics activity evolution in the run of 30 years, especially, a return of the guerilla and other forms of armed struggle to modern cities across the world. Despite some criticism, it seems to me that the comparative research of the relationships between formal and informal activity presented in Current Sociology Monograph 1 (2017) is a substantial input in sociological thought of global age.
