Abstract

The article represents the review of the All-Russian Interdisciplinary Scientific Conference “Academician A. S. Lappo-Danilevsky in memory of the scientific community” held in St. Petersburg in connection with the centenary of the death of the scientist organized by the St Petersburg institutes of the Academy of Sciences. Key topics of the conference were discussed at sections and round tables. The description and summary of the main reports made at the plenary session, breakout sessions and a round table on the history of higher education are presented. The statistics of conference participants (the number of conference participants, research centers, countries and cities) are being specified. The article shows the features of modern understanding of A. S. Lappo-Danilevsky and the interpretation of his views: historical, philosophical, sociological, theoretical and methodological, etc. It is shown that modern scholars pay less attention to the analysis of specific historical works by A. S. Lappo-Danilevsky, focusing mainly on the study of his theoretical works (primarily the “Methodology of History”), his biography (including genealogical research, history of A. S. LappoDanilevsky’s relations with other scholars and professional biography of the historian’s children, something which discloses the contexts of both his views and activities. Many reports were based on new archival materials, which were first introduced into scientific circulation. The reports devoted to “scholarly subjects” (“A.S. Lappo-Danilevsky’s scientific school”) should be referred to the discussions and topics of the conference. The Conference showed that there is an increase in understanding of the meaning of A. S. Lappo-Danilevsky as an organizer of science, the first chairperson of the Russian M. M. Kovalevsky Sociological Society, the initiator of the Institute of Social Sciences in Petrograd, the head of the first historical and scientific projects, etc.
