Abstract

The author defines and analyzes the main trends in the marriage of the population of the Volga-Vyatka region on the eve and during the Great Patriotic War. A short-term increase in the number of marriages in june 1941 is followed by a decrease in the number of marriages in july-october 1941. Only in 1945 (in the Gorky oblast in 1944) did marriage rates exceed the pre-war level. In urban settlements marriages are made larger. The age composition of the spouses has changed. Divorce rates remained low with a predominance of divorces in urban areas, the breakup of a first marriage lasting 1–2 years and 5–9 years between the ages of 20–39. The complication of the divorce procedure made the cases of the official breakup of the family in 1945 isolated cases. The changes affected the very institution of the family (transformation of family values, change in the role of women, increase in the number of single-parent families and etc).
