Abstract

The article examines the state of ethnic identity of children from interethnic families and its relationship with factors that influence the process of its formation at the family level: with the ethnic identity of parents, their attitudes to its formation in children; with the scope and nature of the educational, socializing influence of fathers and mothers; with the language attitudes of parents and practices of using national languages. The main purpose of the article is to answer the question of how the definition of nationality in children by mother, father, and both parents is related to the orientation of parents in the formation of ethnic identity in children and what is their impact on children as subjects of this process. The analysis is based on the results of a survey of children aged 16-23 years and their parents from interethnic families conducted in Bashkortostan in 2019. 363 families were interviewed: 363 parents and 363 children. Main conclusions. Self-determination of nationality by the father dominates in children, but it is preserved more as a tradition than as a result of the influence of fathers, although we can talk about the actual influence of those fathers who, along with mothers, are involved in communication with their children. A child`s identity linked solely to his/her mother is considered abnormal (how to determine nationality) by either fathers, mothers, or children, but it exists as a real practice in children (they have recorded the mother's nationality as their own, feel belonging to it). And this identification is related to the real influence of mothers, their contribution to socialization and upbringing. Bi-ethnic identification is the most normatively correct for children in the situation of different nationalities of parents, but as a practice it is less common than the father's, and is comparable in the number of choices to the mother. More often, bi-ethnic identity is shared by children who rate their fathers and mothers as equal subjects of influence.
