With the unprecedented economic growth of China in the modern period of history, the environmental load has increased every year, exacerbating problems in the areas of population, food, resources and energy consumption. The purpose of this article is to analyze the history of the implementation of the concept of sustainable regional development of the PRC. Results. Based on a systematic approach, Chinese scientists, theorists and practitioners comprehensively addressed issues related to the implementation of the concept of sustainable development in the face of uneven Chinese regions. Since 1999, one of the key components of the regional policy of the PRC has been the application of the concept of sustainable development in practice. The scientific and theoretical basis for using the advantages of regional sustainability was laid in China as part of the economic and geographical direction. Practical experience in using the concept of sustainable development in China since the 20th century. was due to economic and environmental factors in the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The Chinese experience in implementing the regional sustainable development strategy is based on the fact that sustainable development is not a short-term radical change, but the achievement of a long-term effective development. Chinese theorists and practitioners in the process of implementing modernization changes in the regional economy relied on the basic theory of sustainable development. Conclusions. During the socio-economic development of China over the past 40 years, a number of norms and standards of regional governance have been formulated to ensure sustainable regional development. In the regions of China, the process of sustainable development was carried out on the basis of a three-stage growth model: the stage of rapid growth, the stage of decreasing growth rate and the stage of stable sustainable growth. Regional aspects of sustainable development represented a complex system that required comprehensive coordination of economic, social activities of a person based on complex relationships in the natural world.
