Abstract

The paper presents the results of two sociological surveys of senior students’ satisfaction with schooling which were conducted by using representative sampling in the schools of the Belgorod region in the years of 2018 and 2019. The review of Russian and foreign studies of school satisfaction had let to chart the specifics of sociological approach which differs from the psychological one, being aimed primarily at the external context of social interaction and at the managerial perspective. The role of the ‘satisfaction’ concept for measuring efficiency of education is shown. The comparison of two surveys results reveals no positive dynamics but even the decrease of satisfaction level within the timespan under study. An analysis of particular elements of school satisfaction discovers that textbooks and school meal are the ‘weak links’ among other schooling conditions. The severest problems negatively affected on senior students’ school satisfaction are reportedly overloading them with training materials, misunderstanding from teachers, and noisy environment in classes. School satisfaction correlates with students’ public activity and, to a lesser degree, with academic achievement. Besides, school satisfaction is proportionate to functional literacy, especially to its certain elements which mean subjectivity. It is emphasized that satisfaction provides not only organizational loyalty in present, but social capacity of the school for the future. As a conclusion, it is shown how the results of measuring of school satisfaction might be translated into the realm of decision making
