Abstract

How does social mobility affect lay perceptions of inequalities in contemporary societies? Why is it important to study social mobility as a subjective phenomenon? Does a critical examination of social mobility help to fight against inequalities? The articles of this special section address these questions. The authors explain that the issue of social mobility is not only related to social class but also to gender, age, race, and ethnicity. Researching social mobility as a multidimensional phenomenon allows social scholars to have a more complex understanding of the problems related to strengthening inequalities around the world. Apart from this, we suggest to pay attention to geographical peculiari-ties of social divisions, since it is not the same to experience social mobility in the Global South as in the Global North.
