Abstract

Since the beginning of the 21st century, research universities have played a leading role in the development of higher education. The article is devoted to effectiveness of international activity and publication activity of Russian national research universities. The main attention is paid to the analysis of the thematic correspondence of foreign internships and top-rated publications to the industry or leading specialization of the university. The author considers the quantitative and qualitative indicators of publication activity: the number of articles in leading foreign journals, their subject matter and distribution by areas of knowledge. Self-survey reports and bibliometric data from the SCImago Institutions Rankings database are used as empirical material. The theoretical framework of the research is based on the idea that the experience of working in international research groups contributes to an increase in the number and quality of scientific publications. However, this depends more on the research potential of the university than on its formal status. The article concludes that the activities of Russian research universities have different contents: accelerated promotion and occupation of new research niches, strengthening of current positions, or just testing current opportunities. The reason for this is their different research potential.
