Abstract

The purpose of the research is to analyze fertility trends in 2020-2021 in light of expert assessments of the possible impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on reproductive behavior and fertility. The research methods include statistical analysis of fertility on the basis of data from the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) and national statistical services of foreign countries. Research result. Analysis of fertility data in 2021 compared with previous years for Russia and 20 foreign countries for which total fertility rates are available on the Internet showed that those experts who did not assume a significant impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on fertility were probably right. The analysis of fertility rates for Russia suggests that the Covid-19 pandemic may have had a negative impact only on the change in the number of first births in 2021 through a significant decrease in the marriage rate for first marriages among women in 2020. The prospects of the research is for further detailed analysis of fertility data for 2021-2022, when it will be available for most countries.
