Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic led to high levels of excess mortality nearly in all world re-gions. Since the second quarter of 2020, mortality rates are increasing. The widespread of coronavirus infection worsened the situation with natural population decrease in the Ural Federal District. Natural growth, despite its certain reduction, was maintained only in Khanty-Mansi and Yamal-Nenets Autonomous okrugs. In most regions of the Ural Federal District in 2020-2021, there was a slight decrease in fertility rates. However, the situation with mortality in the district developed more sharply; increase in crude mortality was 34.2 % up to 15.7 ‰. The highest mortality growth was recorded in Khanty-Mansi autonomous okrug (+41.7 %), while natural population growth has remained. The most dramatic situation persists in Kurgan oblast, where crude mortality rate in 2021 was 20.4 %. Determining shares of deaths from COVID-19 in additional losses in 2020 and 2021 compared to 2019 indicates a violation of the coding rules when choosing the primary cause of death, which does not allow to assess the true picture of the causes of death in the Ural Federal District.
