Abstract

The chapter shows that income inequality is high even among the mass strata of the population and that the real incomes of Russians have declined quite significantly in recent years, especially in the middle strata. The deterioration of the financial situation has affected first of all people of working age, for various reasons less competitive in the labor market. The age cohort of 46-55 years old was the record-breaker in this respect. Nevertheless, Russians on the whole are rather satisfied with their lives as a whole and with its individual aspects. It has also been demonstrated that the dynamics of material well-being strongly affect the socio-psychological well-being of Russians, their perception of the situation in society, and their readiness to make sacrifices for the country. However, the main role in this readiness is played by world outlook factors, and a person's material position is significant only insofar as it is connected with his or her world outlook. The results of the analysis of behavioral strategies of Russians to improve their financial situation, as well as the strategies of their financial behavior are presented, and the specific features of the position and behavior of representatives of different social groups are shown.
