Abstract

The phenomenon of prostitution in different times has been understood in the society in different ways. The humanities and the natural sciences have made signif-icant contribution to its understanding. The article dis-cusses the role of sociology in the current system of scientific knowledge regarding the understanding of prostitution. The accumulated theoretical and empirical knowledge in the history, philosophy, theology, philol-ogy, journalism, political science, pedagogy, medicine, psychology, law had had significant influence on the formation of the sociological approach to the study of prostitution. At the same time, the sociological ap-proach allows to utilize accumulated knowledge and consider prostitution at all levels of social knowledge.
