Abstract
In an article on the materials of a mass poll and in-depth interviews in Tatarstan, the acute language situation is analyzed. As a context, the data from the all-Russian poll showing the significance of the linguistic factor for ethnic identity, including to a large extent among Russians, were used. Changes in the language policy in Russia after 1991 are analyzed, as well as the basic models of the use of state languages of the republics in education. The rudiments of the language problem, the high demand for native Tatar language among the Tatars in general and, in particular, among the Tatar youth, as well as the decreasing trend of the request for Tatar from the Russians are revealed.
