Abstract

The article is devoted to the perception of social justice by the respondents and is based on materials of the European social research (2008, 2016). The author connects the relevance of studying this topic with the threat of a decline in the stability of Russian society. The ESS database selected questions that allow analyzing the perception of social justice. These questions, focused on attitudes towards income distribution in society and differences in the standard of living, have not been previously considered by researchers in connection with this topic. As a result of the secondary analysis of the ESS, it was revealed that in 2016, compared to 2008, Russian society maintains a more equitable distribution of income among members of society, and also the expectation that differences in the standard of living between people should not be polar . There is an increase in the proportion of people who disagree with the fact that the difference in income between people should be large, since there is also a large difference in their abilities and efforts. Such dynamics can be a reflection of growing anxiety in society, the polarization of income, leading to a division into the very poor and the very rich. In a cross-country context, it is shown that, on average, Russian respondents are not inclined to equalize income among the population as well as residents of European countries such as Slovenia and Finland. Respondents from Poland and the Czech Republic agree to equalization with income, regardless of the abilities and efforts put by the person. Using the CHAID decision tree method, the characteristics of respondents who share and do not share justice judgments are given. It is revealed that the studied equity variables are most of all related to the respondent’s income level.
