Abstract

The history of Russian social thought of the 19-th century is discussed in the book through the looking glass of the public discourse on civic education through history. The national past was not considered by russian major figures as the realm of scientific epistemology rather than the material for historical doxa construction and control. The public narratives are gouped in the book in three periods inside the 19-th century, each developing various views on universalism of modernity and its relation to the national past. In each period 4 heroes are picked up to show the alternatives of the development of public thought towards the historical doxa construction. The discoveries done by russian public thinkers through the whole 19-th century were put lately into the core of the early russian sociology and social philosophy, and do not loose their actuality  even in our days, when the problem of control over national history doxa again has become extremely sharp and civically sensitive.
