Abstract

Evolution of the university nomination from its historic roots to current transformations is under the discussion. The very notion «university» has passed through several stages in its semantic development. Initially it denotated the usual corporation in the medieval city. Moreover, the corporation of magisters and scholars was institutionally ordered in accordance with other urban economic corporations. The universities of the early modern times (the s.c. Humbolt university) structurally and organizationally were completely different, but preserving the metaphorical connection with their roots, still presenting themselves as close urban corporations. Under the conditions of high modernity the name «univer- 186 sity» has become ordinary market oriented label, free to be implied and voluntarily operated. The second quarter of 21 century could become the new epoque of the rising «sustainable university», both as the bicomponent naming and the innovayiove institution. It would more adequately correlate to all global challenges, and harmonically combine different missions in its public role.
