Abstract

The purpose of the research is to assess the state of the social space of regions in the context of regulating social inequalities. Methodology and methods. The article presents the results of a search study using qualitative and quantitative types of analysis. As an empirical base, there were used the rating data of the Petersburg Politics Foundation for 2019 and 2021–22, as well as the results of a mass survey (grant of the Russian National Research Fund (№19-18-00345)) conducted in 12 regions of Russia. The main events of the socio-political life of the regions, bearing both positive and negative connotations, acted as a single analysis. The analysis of the state of the social space of the regions was carried out in two directions: through the analysis of the state of affairs in 32 vital areas of public life and the selection of the main socio-political events in regions. Research result. Data from the study partially supported the hypothesis of connection between those spheres of life that are assessed by the population most positively or, conversely, negatively, and their partial or complete coincidence with the main socio-political events in these regions. In the conditions of existing socio-economic and socio-cultural inequalities, the events of the socio- political life of the regions are a reflection, and sometimes a consequence, of unresolved problems. The activities of government aimed at solving them are not always effective. As a result, instead of regulating social inequality, it is strengthened, which, in turn, can lead to an increase in social distance between government and society, loss of feedback and an increase in discontent on the part of the population. Such processes can have a certain impact on the organization of social space, its boundaries and opportunities.
