Abstract

Our attention is focused on the views on sociology of S. L. Frank, one of the outstanding representatives of Russian social and philosophical thought. His concepts of history, society and state are part of the philosophy of culture, which is based on Christian moral philosophy. Together they form a single whole: Frank believed that the creator of culture is the human personality, it and its actions play, in his opinion, an exceptionally important role in history. Frank's point of view on sociology is inseparable from his assessment of positivism and Marxism. The article shows that their illusions regarding the knowledge of society, the limited scope of their significance, the inconsistency of their claims to universality became obvious to Frank gradually, since in his youth he experienced the influence of the ideas of Comte, Marx and their followers. In his mature years, his attitude to positivism and Marxism can be classified as generally negative. In conclusion, the author shows the relevance today of Frank’s critical attitude to sociology as a science.
