Cognitive distortions, insufficient knowledge about environmental issues can influence behaviour that causes negative damage to the environment. The study of cognitive distortions and their timelycorrection is important for the prevention of possible environmental risks, the formation of biocentric pro-ecological attitudes, values in the framework of sustainable development, selfawareness and a sense of responsibility. This work is based on a meta-analysis of foreign, domestic and author’s theoretical and applied studies of cognitive distortions in the framework of social and environmental issues. As a result, it was possible to identify three main types of cognitive distortions: distortions of individual thinking (maximalistic judgments, a problem with an objective assessment of data based on a lack of knowledge, an objective assessment of environmental contributions and erudition, rigidity of thinking, psychological distance, cognitive dissonance, pluralistic ignorance); social effects (ingroup bias, sympathy bias, selective trust, stereotyping, moral alienation effects), and distortions associated with the carbon footprint illusion and the Jevons paradox. Recommendations were given for each group.
