The author’s research method was the content analysis of open sources of information, such as analytical reports, scientific articles and annual reports of the Republic of Tajikistan and international organizations. The author has closely scrutinized the main sectors of GBAO’s economy and demographic indicators, as well as their impact on the socioeconomic development of the region. The scientific and practical significance of the research lies in the fact that the research results obtained can be used in the future as a basis for analytical and project activities in the development of a strategy for GBAO’s socio-economic development. Based on the results obtained, the author draws the following conclusions: the socio-economic development of the region is closely related to the level of development of industry and agriculture; for further socio-economic development of GBAO, it is necessary to: strengthen business and trade relations with friendly countries in order to attract foreign investment in such key sectors of the region’s economy as agriculture and mining; expand sales channels; create jobs to reduce poverty and minimize emigration of the population from GBAO.
