Abstract

The paper investigates the employment trajectories of working pensioners living in a city of federal significance and in a large city of regional significance. In the course of analyzing modern Russian sources regarding the employment of the elderly, we identify its different nature, related, on the one hand, to the desire to continue working independently and the importance of continuing employment, on the other hand, to its forced nature and the need to continue working to help relatives, as well as to replenish one’s own budget. Based on 50 interviews with elderly people, our goal is to analyze how the specifics of their employment are formed. The following hypothesis is put  forward: the voluntary nature of employment turns out to be the most significant when choosing a particular trajectory. In the course of the work, the hypothesis was confirmed. The employment trajectories of the elderly that we have identified indicate that the choice of continuing employment at the previous place of work or the choice of the trajectory of its change depends on the factor of voluntary continuation of employment. The financial situation and ideas of older people about activities are significant factors. The trajectories we have outlined indicate differences in the employment of older adults in Russia, as well as the importance of the place of residence and the educational factor, which, along with ideas about the activities of the elderly, is associated with the choice of an employment trajectory.
