It points out the great importance of higher education in preserving the human potential of the Far East. Based on Rosstat data, a negative balance of interregional migration of 18-year-olds was revealed in most of the subjects belonging to the Far Eastern Federal District. Using the profile data of users of the social network "VKontakte" for municipalities of the Far East, the cities were identified to which the majority of natives and school graduates go to receive higher education. The zones of influence of the Far Eastern cities – centers of higher education were determined. The issue of the need for further development of the higher education system and improving the quality of life of the population in the Far East is raised.
