The object of the study is student youth of Russia, the subject is the interrelation of socio-labor orientations of students with parental family. The purpose of the article is to identify the role of parental families in providing students in the process of their preparation for labor activity. The results of the online survey of students of Nizhny Novgorod universities conducted in 2024 by the Russian Society of Sociologists “Family in Modern Russia: the Student's View” are presented. The program of the survey was developed on the basis of structural-functional analysis, in accordance with the requirements of which the main structural elements of the object of research and their functional interrelations with the respondents' family were identified, as well as specific-historical analysis, which requires taking into account the circumstances of life in a certain system of coordinates. Theoretical sources and empirical data allow us to conclude that the transformation of socio-economic relations in the country has a decisive impact on the student and his/her parental family, adjusting strategic life goals and ways of solving everyday problems. Being the subjects of market relations, students, despite the same social status, are differentiated by many indicators, including the choice of educational institution, level and sources of income, strategic goals.Forced inclusion in labor activity, which provides a material opportunity to receive education, orientation to the labor start after graduation, often not corresponding to the profile of the received specialty, are the reasons for the decrease in the level of training of future specialists, weakening of the connection with the family and the territory of previous residence.The inconsistency of youth policy of the state, including in the sphere of education, levels its value, orienting many people to obtain a diploma, but not professional competencies.
