Of particular interest to domestic scholars is the problems of population development and regional infrastructure of the northwestern borderland (the Republic of Karelia, Kaliningrad, Leningrad, Murmansk and Pskov regions). The article is devoted to the consideration of the main theoretical views and provisions of domestic scholars, specialists in the field of regional history, regional studies on the problems of spatial and demographic evolution of the border northwestern territory of Russia in the modern historical period from 2000 to 2010. In the course of using a systems approach, problem-chronological and comparative-historical research methods, characteristic features of modern Russian historiography on the development of the territory and population of the northwestern borderland at the beginning of the 21st century were established. Three main groups of domestic studies are defined: the first group, concerning the study of spatial and territorial transformations; the second group, focused on the consideration of regional and economic problems; the third group, analyzing the socio-demographic dynamics of the north-western borderland of Russia.
