Abstract

The research findings presented in this article were determined within the framework of the International Regimes Theory (IRT). The authors sought to determine the degree of influence of the system of international regimes on the transformation of contemporary Russian foreign trade. IRT recognizes that, during the life cycles of international regimes, they can adapt to new conditions and challenges, as well as strengthen and weaken. Based on this theoretical premise, an assessment was made of the current state of the WTO. The research demonstrated that IRT allows for the consideration of protectionism and sanctions as a type of international regime. The authors examined the transformation of Russian foreign trade under the influence of five groups of international regimes, including an assessment of the impact of protectionism and sanctions regimes. It was established that sanctions regimes and protectionism, in the absence of action by international institutions regulating foreign trade, have a significant impact on the efficiency of international trade. It has been established that the direct consequences of the impact of international regimes on the modern foreign trade activities of the Russian Federation are fundamental changes in the geography, structure and volume of Russian foreign trade in terms of the reorientation of Russian exports to the East, an increase in the share of Russian exports to “friendly” countries, an increase in trade with the BRICS countries and a decrease in the volume of exports to the countries of the collective West.
