Abstract

This study is devoted to the consideration of the main theoretical views and provisions of domestic scientists, specialists in the field of regional history, as well as regional studies on the problems of spatial-demographic evolution of the border territory of Central Russia in the modern period of history. In the course of applying comparative-historical and problem-chronological scientific methods in domestic historiography on the regional-demographic development of the Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk and Smolensk regions in the late twentieth - early twenty-first centuries, six groups of research areas were identified: the first group, concerning the consideration of the evolution of spatial-territorial transformations; the second group, including studies of the history of urban and rural settlements; the third group, devoted to the analysis of the influence of the border location on the development of the territories under consideration; the fourth group, concerning the analysis of economic history; the fifth group, associated with the consideration of the evolution of the population; the sixth group, devoted to the study of the development of environmental problems in the borderland.
