In the course of applying comparative-historical and problem-chronological scientific methods in domestic historiography on the regional-demographic development of the Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk and Smolensk regions in the late twentieth - early twenty-first centuries, six groups of research areas were identified: the first group, concerning the consideration of the evolution of spatial-territorial transformations; the second group, including studies of the history of urban and rural settlements; the third group, devoted to the analysis of the influence of the border location on the development of the territories under consideration; the fourth group, concerning the analysis of economic history; the fifth group, associated with the consideration of the evolution of the population; the sixth group, devoted to the study of the development of environmental problems in the borderland.
