The sustainable development of production potential is directly related to the level of food self-sufficiency in the regions. The shortage of personnel and resources in the agricultural sector can negatively affect food security. The authors of the study emphasize the close relationship between the food system, the level of self-sufficiency of regions and a combination of demographic, economic and social factors. The paper classifies the factors influencing the formation of the level of food self-sufficiency of regions; defines the key criteria for ensuring food security; identifies the problems that cause the uneven economic development of regions.; An attempt has been made to determine the time frame within which an equalization of the level of economic development can be achieved. The data obtained indicate that food self-sufficiency at the national level through the sustainable development of food production is a crucial factor in meeting the increasing needs of the population for food resources. This conclusion is particularly relevant in the context of changing climatic conditions and limited natural resources. It is noted that a successful solution to this problem requires close cooperation between government agencies, international organizations, agricultural enterprises and the general population. All these measures should be aimed at increasing the sustainable development of the productive potential of Russia's regions in the context of strengthening the country's food system, demographic and national security.
