It analyzes the characteristics of natural and migration population movements, identifies their fundamental differences, and shows how changes in statistical accounting methodology have affected the reliability of migration data. Special attention is given to inter-republican migration exchange during the Soviet period and the transformation of these flows after the collapse of the USSR. The study demonstrates that in the post-Soviet era, migration became the main compensator for natural population decline, particularly in the 1990s-2000s. The paper explores the scale and ethnic composition of migration flows, including the re- emigration of Russians from former Soviet republics and the migration of titular ethnic groups from these countries to Russia. The study is based on census data, official statistics, and demographic research, providing a comparative analysis across different time periods and geographic directions of migration. The findings emphasize the strategic importance of migration for the demographic sustainability of modern Russia.
