The theoretical and methodological foundations of the study include the concept of modernization, the concepts of nation and nationalism by E. Gellner and B. Anderson, and the methods of functional and comparative historical analysis. Results. The main mechanisms of social integration inherent in traditional and modern societies are identified. In traditional societies, symbolic and local integration, focused on the reproduction of the past and collectivism, prevailed, while modern societies rely on rational, institutional instruments that ensure "organic solidarity" through the interdependence of institutions and groups, the formation of a single political, economic, cultural space and a common national identity.
