Abstract

The article examines the demographic dynamics of Russian regions for the period 2014–2023. The purpose of the study is to comprehensively analyze the impact of migration on the main demographic indicators of Russian territories: the size and age composition of the population. The scientific novelty of the study is to identify current trends in the natural and migration movement of the population, as well as to clarify the impact of migration flows on the age structure of regions. Research methods. Statistical analysis methods were applied to the official data of Rosstat for the period from 2014 to 2023 for 85 subjects of the Russian Federation. Calculations of relative coefficients, averaged values, clustering and correlation and regression analysis were used. As a result of the research, the following key trends have been identified. More and more regions are showing a population decline trend. Natural growth declines fastest in regions where it was relatively high. The contribution of migration to population dynamics remains significant, but it is decreasing along with its volume. The population is aging throughout Russia. The most «elderly» regions are concentrated in the European part of the country, but the growth of the average age in them has already slowed down. Both internal and international migration exacerbate disparities in population distribution. Large volumes of migration on average contribute to the «rejuvenation» of the population, but the role of migration flows in this process is not the same for regions. The practical significance of the results is determined by the possibility of their use in the development of demographic and migration policy measures at the federal and regional levels.
