Abstract

The article is a review of the book: Svetlana Kolchik "New Family. Guest Marriage, Patchwork Family and Other Relationship Formats in the Modern World". The work under consideration reflects current trends in the family and marriage sphere, and the institution of the family is presented as a dynamic entity evolving in parallel with the rapid development of technology, the expansion of opportunities for social mobility, and the evolution of the value–normative sphere of society. The narrative is built around real–life situations practicing modern relationship formats, accompanied by statistics and sociological empirics, and relies on the theories of classical and modern social researchers. Some of the cases presented in the book may seem exotic even to citizens of modern liberal societies. However, as we see it, these examples are important indicators of changes and trends characteristic of a technologically developed society. Our general conclusion based on the results of the review is that the institution of the family, no matter how it is transformed, will not lose its significance in the foreseeable future, since having a close circle of people is one of the basic needs of a person.
