A comparative analysis of various methodological approaches to assessing the quality of life through the prism of the relationship between economic development and the well-being of the population was used as a research method. The empirical basis of the study was made up of data from the United Nations global ratings. As a result of the analysis, it was concluded that the evolution of ideas about the quality of life demonstrates the transition from one-dimensional and predominantly material criteria of well-being to multidimensional assessments that include non-material aspects of human development and take into account the objective and subjective components of human well-being. The conclusions obtained can serve as a theoretical and methodological basis for improving the system of indicators of national development, reorienting economic policy from maximizing gross domestic product to achieving a sustainable improvement in the quality of life of the population
