The author analyzes the role of collective memory of the Great Patriotic War as a foundation for national unity and moral guidance for society. Special attention is paid to the interaction between formal history and personal experience, as well as the impact of state memory policy and digital communication on the formation of citizens’ perceptions of the past. Applying sociological data, the author investigates the relationship between knowledge of family history, assessment of one’s own knowledge of Russian history, and attitude towards attempts to falsify historical events. As the author notes, the willingness of Russians to resist the distortion of historical truth, especially in the context of the Great Patriotic War events, demonstrates their desire to protect not only historical but also family memory.
