Abstract

The preservation and development of Russian society and the state presupposes the existence of historical memory as an important basis for the formation of cultural and moral norms. The nature and orientation of historical education, as a state-regulated activity for the dissemination of reliable and scientifically based historical knowledge in society, has a significant impact on the process of forming the historical memory of various generations of Russians. It should be emphasized that historical memory is noticeably updatedin times of crisis, focusing on some historical events to the detriment of others. The purpose of our research is to identify the features of the historical enlightenment process, to analyze its sequence, conditionality and effectiveness. State influence on the process of formation and change of historical memory is manifested primarily in the creation of school textbooks of national history. The nature and direction of this impact can be revealed to a certain extent in the course of a comparative analysis of the relevant sections of school history textbooks published in the last half century. The question of whether modern textbooks correspond to the interests of Russian society and the state is of fundamental importance. The answer to this question requires not only a thorough analysis of the nature of the changes being introduced into Russian history textbooks, but also an answer to the question of the influence of society and the state on this process. It should be noted that young people self-critically evaluate their knowledge about the Great Patriotic War. Only one in ten considers the available amount of knowledge sufficient, and almost one in four respondents, recognizing the insufficiency of their knowledge, is convinced that they no longer need it, “enough is enough”. The results of our research reveal the presence of “historical unconsciousness” among some young people. Attention is drawn to the increase in the proportion of young people who claim that over the years the memory of the war is increasingly erased in the minds of new generations, it is overshadowed by other events and problems, and heroism and self-sacrifice during the Great Patriotic War become alien to a significant part of the youth. The results of our research allow us to conclude that the common historical memory of different generations is an important condition for the stability of modern society, and that historical memory cannot be preserved in the minds of young people without special efforts by society and the state. These efforts should be focused on forming a historical consciousness based on the inextricable history of Russia and on bringing this historical event as close as possible to the personality of a young man, which implies the implementation of a responsible state policy in the field of historical education.
