The onset of the reform and opening-up policy in the late 1970s and early 1980s and the implementation of the Strategy for Revitalizing the Old Industrial Base in Northeast China since 2003 determined the trends in the spatial and urban development of Jilin Province. Adherence to the principles of the one-child policy since the early 1980s has influenced demographic processes in the province. Over 40 years, a complex spatial system with large, medium, and small cities has formed in Jilin. The province's demographic development has changed from high birth rates, low mortality, and high natural population growth to low birth rates, low mortality, and low natural population growth. By the beginning of the 21st century, In the province, there was a transition from traditional family values to new ones that emerged in the context of building “socialism with Chinese characteristics.”
