It is noted that since 2017, the country has faced a new wave of depopulation due to the entry into reproductive age of a numerically smaller cohort of women and a decrease in the number of children born, as well as an excess of mortality over fertility. The main challenges for the country's development are population decline, demographic aging and the growing shortage of labor resources due to the unfavorable age structure of the population. The measures of the demographic and migration policy of the state in recent years are analyzed, and it is noted that, for all their significance and importance, they are insufficient to overcome negative demographic trends. A number of measures have been proposed to strengthen the scientific potential of demographic policy and improve the effectiveness of the public administration system for demographic development.
