Abstract

In the presented work, the author has tried to identify the main factors that have influenced the current state of the post-Soviet space and determined the prospects for its development in the near future. He paid special attention to the analysis of the relations between the states included in this space, the dynamics of their development over the past thirty years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, as well as the role played by the Commonwealth of Independent States and other integration projects that have appeared in this space during this time. The most important aspect of this study was to identify the role and influence of Russia in the formation and development of the post-Soviet space, primarily in the socio-economic and socio-political spheres. Of particular interest was the study of the process of changing state and political elites in the Newly Independent States, which has become particularly active in the last 10 years and had a significant impact on their interaction. The author also paid considerable attention to the study of another important factor influencing the transformation of the post-Soviet space, which has begun to play a significant role in the last 15—20 years, namely the influence of the leading world powers on the process of political and socio-economic transformations in the new former Soviet republics (except the Baltic States), as well as their interaction and mutual influence. In conclusion, the author noted that in order for Russia to maintain its leading role in the post-Soviet space, it will need to begin the process of internal modernization in order to form a state model that would be attractive to its neighbors in this space.
