Abstract

The need to identify with others, groups, and society as a whole is one of the key needs in modern civilization. At the same time, identification, as a key component of the socializa tion process, has attracted the attention of researchers from a wide range of fields, includ ing psychologists, sociologists, and social psychologists. Identification occurs most fully through communication, which today occurs, in large part, in the virtual space of social networks. This has led to a shift from culturally determined identities to personally orient ed ones, presented in virtual or digital spaces. Based on this and using information from VKontakte, Russia’s largest social network, the author develops an objective understanding of the process and results of identification on social networks across substantive macro groups, trends, and forms.
