Abstract

The fighting in the Khalkhin Gol River area is an example of the Red Army's military prowess, military fortitude, and the fighting brotherhood of the Soviet warrior and the Mongolian Cyric. The events of 1939 were one of the most important conflicts of the first half of the 20th century, which changed the balance of power in the Far East. Nevertheless, there are still «white spots». Currently, researchers are increasingly paying attention to the human dimension of the 1939 conflict — the prisoners, the dead and the wounded. More and more information is becoming known about the situation in the rear — in Manchuria: about the role of Russian emigration, the work of military censorship Japan's efforts to suppress discontent and panic in the army. As for the military aspects, the important role of not only tanks and aircraft, but also artillery, the work of political propaganda and intelligence agencies is becoming more and more obvious . These and many other issues were the focus of discussion at the international round table «85 years of Victory on Khalkhin Gol: what History teaches us», held at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences on October 9, 2024. Researchers from Russia, Mongolia and Japan took part in it. The round table has become important part of the festive events held in Russia and Mongolia on the occasion of 85th anniversary of the conflict. The articles based on the reports of the round table are presented in this collective monograph in an expanded and supplemented form. In addition, the list of works in the monograph contains new research.
