Abstract

The article examines the resource potential of young men with acquired disabilities in the context of the contemporary social model of disability, according to which limitations in life activity are caused not only by a person's health condition but also by the characteristics of the social environment, institutional practices, and cultural attitudes in society. The relevance of the study is determined by the need to examine factors of social integration among young people with disabilities during the formation of their educational, professional, and life strategies. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study comprises the provisions of disability theory, the social model of disability, and the concept of resource potential. The aim of the study is to identify the factors that determine the resource potential of young men with acquired disabilities, understood as readiness and ability to study, acquire new professions, and participate in social and civic activity. The empirical basis consists of the results of an expert survey of heads and specialists of executive authorities in constituent entities of the Russian Federation implementing support programs for people with disabilities. In total, 55 expert interviews conducted in 11 constituent entities of the Russian Federation were analyzed, along with the results of a formalized survey of young men with acquired disabilities conducted in 25 constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The sample was purposive: 419 men aged 18 to 35 with disabilities established as a result of illness or injury. The results show that the resource potential of young men with acquired disabilities is shaped by a complex of objective and subjective factors. Objective factors include socio-economic status, level of education, family support, public attitudes toward disability, accessibility of social infrastructure, and institutional support. The nature of the injury and disability also has a significant influence. Among subjective factors, an important role is played by individual experience of living with disability, personal motivation, self-esteem, and strategies of adaptation to changed life circumstances. The findings make it possible to regard the resource potential of young men with disabilities as an important factor in their social integration and realization of human capital. The study emphasizes the need for a comprehensive state policy aimed at developing an accessible environment, supporting education and employment, and fostering positive public attitudes toward people with disabilities.
