Abstract

This article analyzes two forms of modern state existence: the nation-state and the civilization-state. The authors attempt at evaluation of alternative choices and two theoretical and ideological concepts which explain how states are formed in the modern multi-ethnic space. The comparison made allows formulating their advantages and disadvantages, related to the continued existence of the multi-ethnic world. The authors conclude that the further development of Russian civilizational identity will depend on the ability to find harmony between an emerging multinational self-awareness and a willingness to engage in dialogue with other cultures, as well as between the desire to preserve traditional values and develop innovative evolution in the context of global changes.
