Abstract

This article analyses the key principles governing the relationship between contemporary Russian society and social media. Based on empirical data from 2023–2026, it identifies four fundamental principles underpinning this interaction: discourse polarisation, legitimisation, fragmentation and consolidation. Social media are seen not merely as a tool for exchanging resources, but as a battleground for shaping Russia’s social reality, where societal identity is constructed and redefined. The fundamental function of social media is to create new socially significant meanings and legitimise them through their inherent characteristics, while also giving rise to new challenges for national security and society. The article highlights both their significant constructive potential for the future of contemporary society and the importance of academic research into this subject.
