Abstract

This book is a collection of essays by Alexander Gofman, published in 2013–2025. It includes his memoir notes, two interviews, some journal articles and chapters published in collective works. These essays focus primarily on the history and theory of sociology, areas that have always been the author’s primary interest. Among the topics covered in the book are the ideas and theories of the classics of world and Russian sociology; the lessons that can be learned from studying their works; some current trends in theoretical sociology and social reality, including disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity; the sociological foundations of studying social cohesion, justice, and legitimacy; the culture of “slowness” in the present-day “accelerating” societies; the sociological interpretation of philanthropy; the idea of domination and “power determinism” in contemporary theoretical sociology.
