Abstract

This chapter offers a multidisciplinary synthesis of contemporary approaches to understanding and transforming proenvironmental behavior, with a particular focus on the subjective-level dimensions of transformations and triggers that animate and sustain such change. Moving beyond models that treat behavior as a mere outcome of rational calculation or external influence, we foreground the role of embodied dispositions, affective orientations, identity processes, and sociobiological and social mechanisms as constitutive elements of environmental action. The analysis begins with concepts from neuropsychology and sociobiology of the origin of proenvironmental behavior. Building on this foundation, the chapter examines key theories from personality psychology and soiology (Value-Belief-Norms, Norm Activation Theory, environmental social identity, future self-continuity, motivational approach, affection theory, habit formation, behavioral economics, ecopsychological culture of personality). Environmental social psychology has common instruments with sociological perspective and here is presented sociological frameworks from down-top perspective of the subject-level transformations (habitus approach, framework, social practice theory, actor network theory, neoliberal environmentalism, institutional theory, MLP-perspective). This chapter presented a comprehensive synthesis of over 25 evidence-based intervention tools drawn from theoretical social sciences. These are further illustrated through real-world case studies; subject-centered understanding of proenvironmental transformation recognizes agency as dynamically coproduced construct.
