Abstract

The purpose of the studyis to examine the culture of familism as a value-based, normative, and demographic phenomenon in contemporary Russia in relation to the demographic reproduction of society and changes in family values, marital and reproductive attitudes, and intergenerational relations. Methodology. Drawing on classical sociological concepts, recent studies of the Russian family and current demographic statistics, the paper analyzes changes in marital and family attitudes, intergenerational relations, family roles, large-family orientations and responsible parenthood. Results. The study argues that the family retains a high symbolic status in Russia’s value system, while its practical realization is complicated by nuclearization, economic uncertainty and changing youth life strategies. Research prospects are associated with the further examination of the culture of familism as a system of values, norms, symbols, and everyday practices through which ideas of marriage, parenthood, intergenerational responsibility, and family solidarity are reproduced. Attention should be paid to regional and generational differences in understandings of the family, the mechanisms through which family traditions are transmitted, the influence of educational and media environments, and the cultural conditions required to strengthen the social prestige of families with children.
