Abstract

The article analyzes the reproduction of the population of the ethnic majority and ethnic minorities of the North-West of the RSFSR in 1939–1959. The research was based on the results of the All-Union censuses of 1939 and 1959, as well as archival materials of statistical information from the Central Statistical Office of the USSR. The authors examined the regional and ethnic specifics of the reproduction of the population of the North-West of the RSFSR in the conditions of the second stage of demographic transition. The demographic transition in the USSR in the first half of the 20th century had its own peculiarities, such events as the socio-economic transformations of the 1930s, the Great Patriotic War, and changes in territorial borders caused its discontinuity. During the chronological period under review, the ethnic picture of the North-West of the RSFSR has changed as a result of migration processes, the effects of occupation during the war years, and assimilation. A review of the reproduction processes among ethnic minorities in the North-West of the RSFSR revealed differences in demographic behavior in accordance with the general trends characteristic of the second stage of the demographic transition. The ethnic majority in this region were Russians, who determined the reproduction rates of the population.
