Abstract

The article examines the problem of national-state identification in Russia in historical retrospect and its impact on the quality of life of the population. The authors shows that since the middle of the 16th century there has been an imaginary confrontation between the Russian (ethnocultural) and Rossian (political-civil, formerly Soviet) identities in the country. Based on the analysis of chronicle sources, census statistics and the semantics of key concepts (‘‘Rus’’, ‘‘Russia’’, ‘‘Rossiyane’’), the thesis of the actual dominance of the Russian language, culture and the Russian people is substantiated, while the official discourse retains the concept of a «multinational state». It is proved that such uncertainty of identification models generates a crisis of self-determination, interethnic tension, migration imbalances and erosion of the cultural code, which negatively affects psychological comfort, physical security, social justice and cultural development of citizens. The final part formulates the current directions of state national policy: legislative consolidation of the status of the Russian people as a state-forming nation, the formation of a nation-state, educational and enlightenment projects, personnel training and support for compatriots. The necessity of overcoming the identification crisis as a condition for stabilizing society and improving the quality of life of all peoples of Russia is substantiated.
