Abstract

The article analyses the social and psychological aspects of local critical situation which emerged as the result of wreck of the Soviet ‘Chelyuskin’ ice-breaker in the Kara Sea in 1934. The reasons of the catastrophe, the behavior of the team in the critical conditions, the organizational forms of ‘mobilizing’ behavior of the affected people during their two months life on the ice, an impact on their psychic of extreme weather an informational conditions, the organization of rescue operations are the main topics under consideration. The authors conclude that the protection of social and psychical health of the affected was the result of appropriate organization of work and life under extreme conditions, mutual assistance and trust, and the faith that the state will help them. The notions of equality and justice are socially conditioned.
