Abstract

The purpose of the chapter is to assess the damage inflicted to the socially constitutive structures in contemporary Russia and the prospects for their restoration. Based on the theory of civil society by Charles Taylor, the author considers non-state structures of solidarity, named after Locke and Montesquieu (L- and M-structures) as constituting the agency of society in opposition to the state, corporations and the socially destructive associations. The chapter makes a conclusion about the total destruction of the constitutive social structures at the end of the twentieth century and their displacement by destructive networks. The author believes that it is possible to restore society in Russia as a sovereign agent through the formation of new non-state structures on the basis of volunteer initiatives.
