Abstract

In recent decades monotowns in Chelyabinsk region have faced a serious deterioration in the demographic situation. The problems of socio-economic development and the difficult environmental situation lead to a marked outflow of population. Towns grew up on the basis of factories opened in the last century are in a crisis situation now. The problems of a narrow focus in the modern economy create risks for development and threaten the existence of settlements themselves. The report examines the main demographic trends of monotowns in the Chelyabinsk region. The 21 analysis of the processes of natural population loss and migration outflow is given in it. The reasons for this situation are considered too. The measures taken to improve the socio-economic situation of the settlements under consideration are described. A brief description of possible prospects for urban development and the consequences of the demographic crisis presented. The possibilities for stabilizing the population and reducing migration loss were evaluated
